This article (parts 1 and 2) is one of the most ‘to-the-point’ explanations of what really drives the value in discreet manufactuers. I have seen case after case where millions of dollars are poured into ERP systems that don’t live up to expectations and little is spent on PLM systems and process improvements. This helps to explain why.

The twin phenomenom of Lean Manufacturing and Lean Product Development are following a similar dynamic. Toyota Motor Corporation developed both complemetary systems and is idolized by companies seeking cost savings by implementing Lean principles on the shop floor and sometimes back offices. However, the vast majority of these efforts (like ERP vs. PLM) focus on the Manufacturing principles to the exclusion of the Product Development principles. We must keep in mind that CONSUMERS LOVE Toyota, not because its supply chain can deliver cars to dealerships but because it makes the best luxury (Lexus), high-quality (Camry) and innovative (Prius) PRODUCTS!
